Thomas Markle Arrested in Florida Over Child Abuse Image Allegations
Thomas Markle Sr., father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested in Florida on Friday. The detention follows reports that hundreds or thousands of images depicting child sexual abuse were found during the clearance of his former home in Cebu, Philippines. Markle has denied the allegations, calling them shocking and hurtful.
Thomas Markle Sr., the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was taken into custody in Florida on Friday. The arrest stems from an investigation triggered by the discovery of thousands of disturbing images depicting child sexual abuse at his former residence in Cebu, Philippines.
According to the Associated Press, informed sources confirmed that the detention is linked to the alleged possession of material showing the sexual abuse of children. The evidence originated from a clearance operation at Markle’s home in Cebu, which his son, Thomas Markle Jr., reported in October.
Thomas Markle Jr. stated that during the house clearing, "hundreds, if not thousands" of disturbing images were discovered. He told reporters that he had reported the findings to both Philippine police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The Duchess of Sussex responded to the news with public shock. Meghan previously revealed in 2018 that she had submitted a letter containing "disturbing allegations" against her father to London police. She noted that officers at the time assured her an investigation into those claims was underway.
Markle Sr., 82, has firmly denied the accusations. Citing reports from the Daily Mail, he described himself as shocked and hurt by the charges. "I could never do what I am accused of doing. It is the worst thing anyone could ever accuse me of," he said.
The arrest occurred on Friday morning outside Tampa. Markle Sr. suffered a stroke last year, which resulted in the amputation of his left leg and necessitated his return to the United States. His half-brother told The Sun that their father now resides in a care facility in Florida.
Meghan married Prince Harry in 2018 at Windsor Castle. The couple has two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Thomas Markle Sr. was not present at the wedding due to a breakdown in relations; Meghan had stated she needed distance from her father to protect her children.
Authorities are currently reviewing the circumstances of the arrest and determining next legal steps.
