CSIF Union Demands Renfe and Adif Leadership Overhaul After Transport Minister's Resignation

Following the resignation of Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente, the CSIF union has demanded a comprehensive overhaul of leadership at state-owned rail operators Renfe and Adif. The union argues that legal reforms are necessary to curb political appointments and ensure professional management in the wake of recent railway safety failures.

The CSIF union has called for a complete restructuring of leadership at Spain’s state-owned rail operators, Renfe and Adif, following the resignation of Transport Minister Óscar Puente. The union stated that it is now time to address the "top-down" appointments within these organizations, which it claims were installed without merit.

CSIF emphasized that it was the first organization to demand Puente’s resignation after the fatal train accident in Urda, Toledo. In a statement reported by Europa Press, the union urged for legal reforms to stop political appointments and ensure that public enterprises are led by the most qualified professionals rather than political allies.

The resignation of Puente has triggered immediate reactions from Spain’s main opposition parties, who have framed the departure as politically motivated rather than a response to public pressure or victim advocacy. The People’s Party (PP) asserted that Puente’s exit was driven by unfavorable polling data from the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS), directed by José Félix Tezanos, rather than accountability for the disaster.

In a press release, the PP, led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, argued that the resignation would not satisfy demands for justice. The party pointed to previous infrastructure appointments made by former minister José Luis Ábalos and Puente as the root cause of the crisis. "We will dismiss them at the ballot box," the statement read, noting that 116 deaths require truth and accountability at the highest levels.

Vox leader Santiago Abascal took a more direct approach on social media platform X, asserting that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez must resign rather than hiding behind his ministers. Abascal accused Sánchez of being the "head of the mafia" and the "brain of the criminal organization" governing Spain. He listed several figures he blamed for the crisis, including former minister Ábalos, former interior minister Koldo García, and various government delegates.

Abascal claimed that only a massive voter response at the upcoming November 29 elections could hold Sánchez accountable and restore national dignity. He urged the Prime Minister to step down and place himself at the disposal of judicial authorities.

Despite the political fallout, CSIF warned that the resignations alone would not resolve the crisis in Spanish rail transport. The union stressed that the situation will only be considered closed when there are sufficient explanations, complete accountability, and guarantees that such safety failures will not recur.
